blog entry #2 :: pg 201-300

Education is stressed throughout pages 201-300. Alot of things have been happening at Crenshaw's Gifted Program. Olivia still struggles coming to school on time, Toya trying to find a school for teenage mothers, Ms.Little still feeling assaulted by the "racism" the staff gives to her, Curt awaiting his acceptance letter from Standford, and danielle and her father"s bond. All the students that attend Crenshaw"s gifted program are all alike in one way: education. Through all the obstacles they face throughout thier lives, they have one main priority which is education. They believe that through education they can get out the hood and actually achieve somrthing far better than what they're parents had given them. Take for example Toya. Toya is a very bright girl who all of a sudden returned to Crenshaw with a 10 day old baby, an unexpected birth that shocked everyone especially braxton. But Toya didnt quit there and she was not about to become a statistic. She did everything she could do to gain her education to get her and her new born baby out the struggle without the help of her aunt. Toya and the rest of the students all have this urge to suceed in life so they can become better.

clarification: who is tommie smith? and why is he important?
application : Do you think that your future depends on how your parents raise you? Why? or why not ?
application: if you were in olivia's shoes and was in jail would you give up on school? or just keep going?

Application: I think if I ended up in jail like Olivia, I would not give up on school because when I get out of jail I am going to have to rely on my education to make it. I would also continue because if I made education part of my life for about 14 years then why give up on it; it makes no sense.

Application: I do not think your future depends on how your parents raise you because a parent can raise a well-mannered child, but if that child makes bad descisions then it is on that child part not their parents. A parent can only do so much for their child; they are only suppose to lead a child into their first few steps of their future and from there the child controls their next steps.

Clarification: Tommie Smith is an African American male who participated in the 1968 olympics and recieved a gold medal for getting first place in his race. When standing on the stage to get his medal, he and John Carlos made a silent gesture to be heard around the world.They held their fists up with a black glove on to symbolize black unity and black strength. They did not wear shoes to represent black poverty. Smith wore a black scarf and Carlos wore beads to represent black lynchings. Tommie Smith wanted to show the world that America's constitutional promise of equality for all was not being fulfilled in black America. This is important because he stood up and without violence, showed moral courage. He is Danielle's father and he has been there for her to give herthe encouragement to be the best.

Applacation: I don't think a child's future soley depends on how their parents raise them, because as we see, these students have gone through many rough situations but they can still look forward to a bright future. Parents have influence on their children, but it's the decisions the children make that determine what will happen.

Application: As Liza said, I would not give up on school because when I get out, I would need an education to make something out of myself, and if I didn't continue on with school, I would not be able to do that.
