What comes to mind when you hear South Central in LA ? Crenshaw High School ? Most likely you would be thinking pregnant teenagers , gang banging, and drive by shooting every day , probably people fearing for their lives every day and afraid of coming out the house. But what people dont see are the determined, dedicated, and intelligent scholars there are in the "ghetto." America sees South Central to be a place of unreliable , no future people. But in Miles Corwin's book, "And Still We Rise" shows the life of the 12 gifted talented minority students who struggle everyday in life and still be able to maintain a 4.0 GPA and get accepted in the top UC's over white students. Corwin mainly focuses on the students and not the teachers. He focuses on obstacles the students must face just to graduate school. The students goes through family issues, financial issues, and social issues. And Corwin follows the life of the 12 students lives and tell their miracoulous stories.

Clarification:
I think teachers can have a greater affect on students than parents because it is sometimes the teachers showing a greater interst in the students life. I think it depends on whether the teacher or the parent is showing a greater interest in the student and their future.
Application:
So since the media has great impact on what people think, the more they putdown the minority community the more they will convince people that minorities are less then what they seem and aren't very important.
Clarification:
I think parents have a greater imact on their childs' life than teachers because the things that go on at home and in the family affect chilren more because that's what they go home to every day and live with. If things are wrong at home, students generally carry it into school and either work to make it better or continue to go down hill. The home life is what molds a person into who they are. Other people can come in and can have some affect so teachers can impact students, but it's the decisions and life choices the parents make that affect them more.
Gee Emerald good question about teachers. I think both! It also depends on home much interaction and quality time parents spend with their children. I think teachers can have a tremendous impact on students depending on the types of lessons and community that is cultivated in the classroom. Also Emerald, good work, but since your text is so long- try longer precis blog posts. Don't feel constricted by a short paragraph. What does the author argue in each chunk- what might be his purpose in each chunk? Read and write as if you were to have a test onthe chunk-- Ms. G
